A few items to consider when it comes to choosing airline credit cards/frequent flier cards:

KNOW THYSELF

  • Do you travel a little or a lot? (airline miles can expire after a year or two. Check for this)
  • Do you charge a lot on credit cards? ( You have to build points up quickly before they expire)
  • Do you pay your balance off every month? (airline credit cards generally have higher interest rates that can offset any accumulated miles)

ANALYZE

  • Do you prefer a particular airline? (some issuers are flexible while others are allied with a specific airlines)
  • Is there a dominant airline at your preferred airport? (Might consider teaming with them)
  • What are point requirements for free flights incl. expiration date of accum'ed points.
  • Check for the redemption criteria and any blackout dates
